An Egyptian Restaurant

This restaurant is located at Lagårdsveien, just across the police station. I bring my family here for lunch or dinner once a month. I like this restaurant because the place is nice and comfortable; the food is delicious with good prices and most of all it is halal meat.

The Natural Path

Stavanger is full of the nature paths winding along the coastal areas as well as more inland. As I told you yesterday, this is from close to the gamlehjemmet and the marina from the last two postings. I will take a picture of another path in the future.

As I’m writing this, it is raining outside just like a tropical storm. So when you see all my photos showing sunny days, well actually Stavanger also has its share of wind and rain.

Ramsvig Marina

Stavanger has many small marinas, this is one of them. Yesterday I posted a photo of Gamlehjemmet and this marina is on the right side of that building.

At the far end, on the opposite side of the marina, you can see the nature path winding its way around the marina and gamlehjem. I will show you a view of the nature path tomorrow.

Ramsvig Gamlehjem

This building has been used for various purposes. And now it is used as a home for old people. They have added two new wings. Unfortunately the new part is built in a modern style, clashing with the beauty of the old building.

The surrounding area is very serene and beautiful, with a small marina, a kolonihage and a nature path.

Old Tree in the City Park

This is a very old tree and only a few branches are sprouting. It looks a little bit like an Ent from Lord of the Rings.

Ullandhaug House 1

I passed this pretty house on the way to Ullandhaug tower. The greenery surrounding the house and the house bland beautifully. This is a house that I could imagine myself living in. Next time I will show you another house that I like to live in.

Street Light in St. Olav Complex

St. Olav complex is a block of a new modern tall buildings. It has many apartments and a few quality shops. This type of street lights lines the main street cutting through the complex.

The Hole in the Building

This building is housing art gallery and art print shop. Actually it is run by local artists. The kind of art produced is mostly drawings or numbered prints.

The hole in the building is actually a poster printed and hung on the wall. This excavator is just happen to be standing there (just my luck).

Saturday Morning Market

Every Saturday some people come to this place to sell their things. This is not things qualified as antiques, but things they want to sell. It can be old type LP records, videos, vases, paintings, cheap jewelry and other knick-knack. They also sell waffles, tea and coffee. Most people just look but some sales are made. People do it just for fun.

Red Cows

These red cows are grassing on the field on one of the farm in the outskirt of Stavanger. The cows are kept to produce milk for consumption. Norwegian milk products are very good and people coming to Norway are falling in love with our milk, cheeses and ice creams.

Iron-age Farm

Iron-age farm at Ullandhaug is just 3 kilometers from central Stavanger. It is connected to the Archeological Museum, and you can go there free after a visit here.

Sited not far from modern blocks of apartments, this iron-age site has been largely restored. Long buildings for people and animals, with stone walls and turf roof. Sunday is often the best day to come, when various old skills are demonstrated and you can try them out yourself. Children love making and decorating clay pots, or making wool thread, for example. There may also be food cooked on the open fire. There are good views from the hill just above the farm.

This is the view looking North from Ullandhaugtårnet. The field you see in front of the three apartment blocks used to be an iron age farm. Tomorrow I will post about it.

Glitzy Motorcycle

When I took a picture of the Canning Museum, I saw this Harley parked in the yard of one of the house in Gamle Stavanger. This one attracted my attention because it was so clean and shiny. This is a new motorcycle built like an old model. What do you think?

The Norwegian Canning Museum

The Canning Museum is located in the premises of the former canning factory in Øvre Strandgate 88, which is a part of the city known as 'Gamle Stavanger' (Old Stavanger). In this authentic factory environment, the production of canned brisling and fish balls can still be seen.

From the 1890s to approximately 1960, the canning industry was Stavanger's most significant trade. The exhibition provides insight into the environment and the working conditions of the canning factories. The complete process, from the arrival of the fresh fish until the cans leave the factory, can be seen in detail. The machinery is still in good technical condition, and on every first Sunday of the month, as well as Tuesdays and Thursdays during the summer season, the smoking ovens are lit. On these days visitors can taste freshly smoked brisling right from the oven.

Everything for Children

This statue portrays Mr. Lars H. Lende (1882 – 1971). He worked for less advantaged children. At that time when people overlooked children from poor family, or children living in orphanages, he did something to help them. He kept ponies and took children out for drive with the ponies pulling the wagon.

He was trained by his stepfather as a mechanic and later he started his own workshop where he employed less fortunated boys. He was very generous and had many original ideas. And he published a newspaper called ‘Fagamatøren’. He was a very warm hearted man and when he died the communal put up a statue of him.

Mosvangen Campsite

This is the only camping ground in Stavanger. It is a big and nice camping ground next to Mosvatnet. It is only 20 minutes walk to the town center. People can hire small cabins, some come by bicycle and use tents, some use caravans or camping cars. The red house on the right, on the top photo is housing the office, a small shop and at the basement are showers, toilets and facility to wash clothes.

Mosvatnet is a beautiful lake close to the centre of Stavanger, popular with walkers, runners and cyclists. The lake is quite shallow and was used as a drinking supply for the city until 1931. There are plenty of ducks (and seagulls!) to feed along the way. The 3km lighted trail goes around the edge of the lake, passing the Rogaland art museum and Mosvangen campsite. The 4km folkesti (county footpath) route crosses the footbridge into the woodland on the other side of the motorway, passes the outdoor swimming pool which I had posted yesterday, then rejoins the lakeside trail. If the weather is cold enough during the winter, the lake becomes an enormous skating rink (after safety checks).

Outdoor Swimming Pool

Three days ago I posted about the Stavanger Svømmehall and Matthieus wanted to see the inside of the pool. Unfortunately it is not allowed to take a picture of the inside. So today I post the outdoor swimming pool instead. The photo was not so clear coz I took it from the bridge.

Behind the wall there is a big swimming pool for adults. The pool is heated by a transformation station. So to cool it when they transform the electricity from high voltage to low voltage the cooling water is heating the pool. In the winter since we use the electricity to heat our home, we use more electricity and need more cooling water. So the water in the pool actually is warmer in the winter. The adult pool is open all the year around. So in the winter you can swim when there is snow around the pool. So it can be quite cold to walk from the wardrobe to the pool.

Straen Senteret

This is a small mall next to the Stavanger Svømmehall with cafes, hairdresser, book shop, sport shop, wine shop, pharmacy, perfume shop and the nice and big supermarket. Parking area is on the top of the mall.

It used to be as ugly as the swimming pool but because of the greenery on the wall, it becomes more interesting.

This is the building housing the swimming pool in the city center. Inside it is very nice, clean and modern. There is a big pool for those who can swim and a smaller one with extra heated water for the children and those who can not swim. Also there are saunas and exercise facility.

This building is considered by many people in Stavanger to be the ugliest building we have. What do YOU think?

Kolonihage

Kolonihage means allotment garden. It’s a place where people can plant flowers, tree, vegetables or anything they like. For people who have a hobby gardening but no place to do that because they live in an apartment, can buy a piece of land here. Of course if they can afford it coz the price even for a small land is expensive. They can also build a small house if they want to. It will be very nice to have a cup of tea/coffee or having barbeque or just relaxing here on summer.

Godalen Beach

It is just about 2.5 km from the city center. The beach is fabulous on a hot summer's day and equally fantastic for an energising walk in a storm. The coastalwalk is scenic route to walk or bicycle for families, although the trail is a little steep in some sections.

Gladmat 2006

Gladmat is a food festival in Stavanger that means different things to many people. If you want to sit with friends and have familiar food, you will find it - but you can also find strange and unusual food. Many local producers of fish, meats, herbs, breads and other foods, that you never knew existed, can be found here. You can sit and watch master cooks taking part in gastronomic competitions.

Gladmat started in around 1999 and has grown in size and confidence, with exhibitors and sellers and outdoor cafes and restaurants filling up both sides of Vågen - the main harbour in central Stavanger. There are 100 stands participating in Gladmat 2006. It started on Wednesday 26 and will last until Saturday 29. Every year has a different theme and for this year the theme is ‘tales of food’. Last year about 250.000 people visited this food festival, some people come more than once ....

Helgi Joensen

This gallery is owned by Helgi Joensen, who is born and has lived most of his life by the coasts of Northern Atlantic Ocean. He is an artis who works mainly in pewter and make it looks like grown out of rock. Pewter has been used for several thousands years for thousand different purposes; but never like this before. Strawberry Abundance

Every summer the city overflows with strawberries. This is an open market in front of Stavanger Domkirke. They sell from their own farm strawberries, red raspberries, moreller, fruits and vegetables. Later on comes plums and pears.

Women by the Well

This statue portrays two women getting water from a public well. In the old days many houses did not have piped in water. The well was also a social gathering place for the women in that age. This was more than a 100 years ago.

Garden in Gamle Stavanger

One of the houses in Gamle Stavanger has this flowery garden leading to their door. As you can see some of the houses are located behind the houses lining the street. In the old days these houses were for fishermen and sailors and big families lived in them.

Gamle Stavanger (Old Stavanger), also known as Straen, is the largest surviving wooden house settlement in northern Europe. It is a beautiful area of little wooden houses and cobbled streets along the west side of the harbour - just where the cruise ships moor during the summer. Nearly all the houses are white (only a few are allowed to be another colour) and they vary in age from less than 100 to about 300 years. The houses are lived in and most are privately owned. Almost totally un-commercialised, there are a few galleries to watch artists at work and the sardine canning museum. There are also little play areas, bench seats here and there. In the small park at the southwest corner, near the Straen centre are some sculptures.

Stavanger Harbour

This is the picture of Stavanger harbour. Many boats from other coastal town come and stay for a few days for holiday. Some come only for a day trip mostly to fill up the boat with fresh water and petrol.

Another Flower

On the way back home from Ullandhaug tower I saw this flower grows wildly on the street side. It looked so pretty to me that I had to stop to take a picture of it. I don't know much about flowers so I have no idea what its name.

Another View From Ullandhaugtårnet

This is looking West from Ullandhaugtårnet. The water you see looks like a lake, but it has a small opening to the sea. This water is called Hafrsfjord. This is where the big battle happened when Norway was gather to one kingdom. They fought among themselves from Viking ship. The building closer is Stavanger University. The water behind Hafrsfjord is North Sea, extending all the way to England and further all the way to America.

Remember it was a Norwegian that set foot first in North America, 500 years before Columbus. His name was Leif Erikson.

Overlooking Stavanger Center from Ullandhaugtårnet

Here I'm looking from Ullandhaugtårnet towards East, overlooking Stavanger. This view shows most of Stavanger center. As you can see, Stavanger is located next to the sea and in this case it is the fjords cutting into the mountains. You can also see many islands, some are habitat and some are open for camping and visiting by boat.

Ullandhaug tower is visible all around the area, which makes it a useful landmark. The tower is owned by Telenor the telephone and communications company which is located on the highest hill of Stavanger. It is not possible for the public to access the upper floors of the tower but from the lower platform that is accessible to the public you can have a view of Stavanger and its surroundings. On Sundays there is a cafe open inside selling coffee and waffles for sightseers and walkers, with a picnic bench outside. I will post some views from there next time.

First Ruler Over Norway

Harald Hårfagre (c.850 - c.933) was the founder and first king over Norway. Those stones are the symbol of him and the kings he overcame to gather Norway under his rule. Below is the close-up photo of the Harald Hårfagre's stone which is the biggest one.

This is the local newspaper office where they print and distribute the newspaper. It is located right in front of IKEA. The main office is in the city center.

Flowers by the Window

The weather was nice, the sun was shining and the wind was blowing softly. So I took my daughters for a little walk in our neighborhood. We passed a house which attracted my attention. Flowers were growing by the window. I thought it was so pretty that I wanted to share it with you all.

It means playground. You will find it everywhere here. In one neighborhood at least you can find two or three playgrounds. It’s very good for me coz I don’t have to take a long walk if I want to take my daughter to the playground. But it also causes a problem since my daughter loves to play. There are about five playgrounds between my house and the city center. Usually it only takes 25 minutes to walk. So you can imagine how long it will take if we walk to the city center and we are in a hurry, and my daughter always stops and plays every time she sees the playground.

This building is a place where people make and store food for fish and farm animals. Norway is exporting a lot of fish. Before the fishes were mostly caught in the North Sea but now more than half the amount is farmed and raised in our fjord.

This is a police station not far from city center. Norway has only one police service. The Norwegian Police is based on the principle of an integrated police, meaning that all functions of the police are concentrated in one organization.

There are 27 local police districts, each under the command of a Chief of Police. The chief of police has full responsibility for all policing in his district. Each police district has its own headquarters, as well as several police stations (70). The districts are divided into sub-districts (319), under the command of a "lensmann".

All police officers are trained to be generalists, able to fulfil every aspect of ordinary police work, including criminal investigation as well as patrolling and maintaining public order.

Street Series - Nymannsveien

I passed this street very often if I want to go to the city center. Also if I want to visit my parents in law coz their apartment is nearby. I wait for the bus on the left side of the street. On the right side you can see the low brown shed. You can throw here plastic, anything from glass that you don’t recycle (i.e. bottles) and metal (i.e. cans).

Here garbage is collected every week in three kinds of bin. Green for paper, brown for food left-overs and black for everything else. You can see there’s black bin on the street side it means it’s a garbage collection day for this street.

Beach Volley Ball

While many people in the world talking about World Cup, people here in Stavanger are enjoying the beach volley ball tournament as you can see on the above advertisement. It is held every year.

For semi finals and the final they hold it in a close area. We must buy the ticket to go inside. I didn’t buy the ticket coz it’s difficult to go inside with baby carriage so I took the below picture from a far distance. This was the only angle I can get. I’m sorry I couldn’t give you a better picture.

Open Market

This is an open market where we can find cheap things such as glasses, T-shirt, necklace, bracelet, hat, balloon, toys, stick etc. Usually it started from 10 in the morning til 4 in the afternoon. This boy was so kind posing for me even though he looked a bit nervous.

Statue

This statue is dedicated to the men and women of Norwegian blood who have contributed to the building of America as you can read on the stone. It was built 150 years ago.

More than 160 years ago Norwegian people started the immigration. This statue was made to celebrate the 100th year of immigration which means that it was built around 60 years ago. My apology.

Domkirke

It’s an old cathedral called Stavanger Domkirke. The cathedral was built in Anglo-Norman style, probably by English craftsmen in the year 1125. In 1272 the cathedral was damaged by fire, after which it received a new chancel built in the Gothic style. Stavanger Cathedral is the only Norwegian cathedral from the Middle Ages that has retained its original appearance and been in constant use.

When we took a walk in the city center yesterday, I saw this lovely swan family having a leisure time at the edge of the lake. Apparently these eggs just had hatched. What a cute baby swans.

The Fountain

After postponing many times, finally I decided to publish Stavanger Daily Photo today. I will begin my photo blog by showing you the fountain in the middle of the lake. The name of the lake is Breiavatnet which means wide lake. I have no idea why its name is wide lake because actually the lake is just small, ha ha.
